Hello again! We hope this Fall finds you healthy us - HERE Arts Centerand inspired. There seems to be beautiful art abounding here in NYC which is thrilling to see and to contribute towards. Our summer was fast paced and exciting. We premiered Alexandra’s solo show, us. A scathing, political and controversial dance-theater solo, us attempts to form compassionate bonds to all sides of the aisle and follows one woman in her search for a healthy relationship to a sick country. After a beautiful two-year residency at HERE Arts Center and lots of deep investigation, this work revealed itself to be both personal and fiercely political. Critics were phenomenally supportive of the work.

On the very near horizon is a shared evening at Dance New Amsterdam to premiere the latest full company work, what comes after happy. What comes after happy cracks open our cultural obsession with happiness. More than almost any country, America is driven by the search for a state we consider “happy,” as if happiness were a state of the Union rather than a state of being. We seem to be constantly mapping out the route towards a place, rather than experiencing the journey and taking in the states along the way. Splice: Alexandra Beller/Dances & Adele Myers and DancersWhile other countries give deep value to the states of sadness, anger, passion and fear, we often whitewash our everyday lives toannounce to the world and ourselves that we do not covet, that we are not filled with unrest, that we do not mourn. What comes after happy asks the titular question through humor, irony, extravagant fantasy and honest confessions. We are presenting this as a work in progress, still new and searching for its balance. We will be continuing rehearsals and presenting again at HERE Arts Center’s Culturemart Festival January 16th and 17th, 2008.

Alexandra had the honor of being featured in a radio interview on WBAI recently. She spoke about happiness with Nicholas Vreeland, Director of The Tibet Center, and Armand DiMele on his show The Positive Mind.
