Alexandra Beller/Dances Newsletter
2006 was an amazing
year for us. We created You Are Here, an evening length work based loosely
on Sartres gripping play,
No
Exit, and performed in the gorgeous and supportive community of Dance
Theater Workshop. Alexandra received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin
at Milwaukee, so the company is now available to take on a permanent residence
at a University should the offer arise. We received our 501 (c)(3) determination
and are now officially our own non-profit dance-theater company. To that
end weve hired a wonderful development associate, Kaitlin Hines, and a
phenomenal company manager, Tara Burns. Together with our tireless intern,
Blair Bodie, they have been working to create a stronger database, connect
with presenters and funders, and to finally meet our grant and presenting
deadlines and get things in place for the next show. Our APAP showing at
HERE was wonderful. They had a record 64 presenters attend and weve received
positive encouragement and potential bookings already from many of them.
In other big news: the newest member of the company is not ready for stage
yet, but Lucas Sebastian Hart was born on September 5th 2006 and is flourishing
beautifully.
Upcoming Performances
Coming up on the horizon is Alexandras solo show, us. A scathing, political
and controversial dance-theater solo, us attempts to form compassionate bonds
to both sides of the aisle and follows one woman in her search for a healthy
relationship to a sick cou ntry. After a beautiful two year residency at HERE
Art Space and lots of deep investigation, this work is revealing itself to be
both personal and fiercely political and will premiere at HERE June 20, 2007
(soon!). Kristin Marting has come on board as our stalwart director, Karen Young
as the visionary costume designer, and the brilliant Mandy Ringger as our beacon
of light. We are very excited to share the work.
We are thrilled with the generous commissioning support of HERE and are pleased to announce there will also be a Benefit performance, with food by 12 Chairs, an incredible Israeli/Middle Eastern restaurant, cocktails and sumptuous desserts. Information will be forthcoming about the details!
In The Works
This summer, Alexandra will be on the faculty of Dance
New Amsterdams Summer Dance Intensive, a four-week festival of techniqu e
and repertory culminating in a weekend of performances. That takes place the
month of July. August brings a teaching residency in Holland, and October will
bear the companys first new group work since You
Are Here. DNA is presenting Alexandra Beller/Dances in collaboration with Adele Myers and Dancers. We will be showing our as-yet-uncreated new work what
comes after happy. We are looking for a home for a full spring 08 season, where we hope to bring back the passionate and riveting Why
Things Fall, as well as create a new work, possibly with legendary playwright Charles Mee.
